Blood stains can be the most stubborn of stains. Find out how to deal with them in a few simple steps.
You will need 2 quarts of cold water, 1 cup of salt, a mild bar soap, hydrogen peroxide, a large mixing bowl and light-colored cloths. Dark colors may bleed onto the fabric.
Step 1: Go Cold
With most protein based stains Cold water can be your first line of defense. Heat can actually change the chemical structure of protein stains, making them much harder to eliminate. Anyway, simply agitate and soak the stained item of clothing in cold water. If the stain is old or dried try mixing in a little detergent to loosen the stain up.
Step 2: Salt The Wound
If plain water doesn't do the trick, try adding 1 cup of salt to 2 quarts of cold water. Soak your item in the salt mixture for at least 30 minutes.
Step 3: Suds It Up
Mild bar soap is useful for loosening up the stain and can be used on all kinds of stains except for fruit stains, as it will set them. Rub a mild soap on any remaining stain, and then rinse with cold water.
Step 4: First Aid
If the stain is on white clothing, you can treat it with 3% hydrogen peroxide, the kind that's used for first aid. Make sure you're using a relatively new bottle of hydrogen peroxide, as it loses its potency after a while.
