Pink eye is a symptom for a medical condition called as conjunctivitis and is not a condition by itself. Pink eye is a usual problem with the eye which can have various causes. Pink eye is characterized by pain, crusting, itching, irritation, stinging, grittiness and burning symptoms which helps the person diagnosing it to identify whether it is any type of conjunctivitis. The pink eye that is said to be contagious is normally related to the viral and bacterial infections. What is the reason for the pink eye?
If the conjunctiva is swollen, it leads to pink eye. Conjunctiva is the membrane that covers the white portion of the eye and the internal lining of the eyelids. Conjunctiva is known to be transparent and it consists of blood vessels on the surface of the eye. The substances that caused the inflammation will make the blood vessels in the conjunctiva to dilate. The pink and reddish eye appearance is dependent on the dilation of blood vessels. The red color is evident in terms of the white sclera.
Symptoms of pink eye
- Allergic conjunctivitis which creates itching sensation, excessive tears and redness in the eyes. The person might also have stuffy nose and running nose.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis spreads to the eyes and causes intensive discharge which appears greenish. The eyelids might have crusting appearance.
- Viral conjunctivitis will normally infect one eye. This eye will have excessive discharge of water and also a light discharge. Crusting on eyelids also occur.

Home Remedies for Pink Eye
- Vegetable Juices: The juices of raw vegetables like spinach and carrot were found to be significant in conjunctivitis. About 200 milliliters of spinach juice mixed with 300 milliliters of carrot juice is found to be beneficial in the treatment of pink eye in conjunctivitis.
About 200 milliliters of raw parsley juice added with 300 milliliters of carrot juice will also be useful in the treatment of pink eye.
- Indian Gooseberry: The juice extracted from Indian gooseberry combined with honey is useful for handling conjunctivitis. A small cup of the gooseberry juice is taken along with honey taken in two teaspoons every day to deal with this pink eye.
- Vitamins: The vitamins B2 and A are found to be useful in pink eye management. The person is suggested to take food rich in vitamin sources. Some of them are whole milk, butter, yoghurt, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, mangoes, papaya, pumpkin and carrots which are rich in vitamin A. The food sources rich in vitamin B2 are almonds, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, milk, bananas and citrus fruits.
- Coriander: The eye can be washed with the dried coriander decoction prepared with about sixty ml of water. This remedy is found to be giving relief from pain and decreases the swelling. This decoction is beneficial for those who are suffering from chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.
The diet that is used for benefiting pink eye or conjunctivitis
- Fresh fruits: The people having conjunctivitis are suggested to take all fruit diet except bananas as three meals for the day. It is good to follow fruit fasting for about a week in which juice fasting can be followed for about three days.
- Chapattis and nuts: The juice fasting done for three to four days should be followed by all fruit diet for about seven days. After this period, it is good to take restricted food intake which consists of the raw mixed vegetable salad, fresh fruits, whole meal bread or wheat made chapattis, nuts and cooked vegetables.
- Starch and sugar are avoided: The person having conjunctivitis or pink eye has to avoid taking foods consisting of sugars and starch like potatoes, white bread, refined jams, confectionery, cereals, meat, string tea and coffee, fatty foods, sauces, condiments and puddings.
